'Scream' (1996) & 'Psycho' (1992)

Opening scene from 'Scream' 1996 directed by Wes Craven

The opening scene, is of Casey who is waiting for her boyfriend to come over. Whilst waiting for her boyfriend she receives a call which make her feel uneasy however, she is drawn into a conversation with the mysterious caller. Casey thinks its her boyfriend being joking around with her and furiously the man frightens her by saying something. Their is a establishing shot which sets the scene of where Casey is and this also reveals to the audience.

There is a camera shot which reveals to us that Casey lives in a isolated place so this shows us that she is on her own away from everyone else. As soon as this is shown this tells us that it is a horror film. This makes it more frightening as Casey will not be able to receive help from anyone and this puts us on the edge of our seat as we want to know what is going to happen.

'Scream' uses sound to engage as well as to scare the audience. For example: when Casey realises she is being watched, she locks up the doors and walks into the other and straight after the door bell rings this frightens the audience as well as Casey as it was unexpected. Also when Casey keeps receiving phone calls from the mysterious caller.
